How to play

  1. 1Guess the five-letter internet word in six tries. Any five letters are accepted, so you can probe for vowels.
  2. 2After each guess the tiles flip: green is the right letter in the right place, amber is in the word but elsewhere, dark is not in the word.
  3. 3A letter marked amber appears in the word only as many times as it is marked — the standard duplicate-letter rule.
  4. 4The keyboard remembers what you have learned. Use it, and use the Enter and Backspace keys or the on-screen ones.
  5. 5One word a day at midnight South African time, the same for everyone. Win to keep your streak; lose and you still learn the word.

A glossary, one word a day

The pool is the vocabulary of getting online in South Africa: FIBRE and GLASS and LIGHT for the line, MODEM and ROUTE and PORTS for the kit, CACHE and PROXY and TOKEN for how the web works, STAGE and ESKOM and VOLTS for why the router went dark. Every result card defines the word, so a loss is a lesson.

Is Speedle just Wordle?
The rules are Wordle's — six guesses, five letters, green, amber and dark tiles — but every answer comes from the vocabulary of getting online: the line, the equipment, the protocols, the things that break and a few South African particulars like ESKOM and STAGE. Every result card defines the word.
Why does it accept words that are not real?
There is no bundled dictionary, so any five letters are a legal guess. That keeps the page small and lets you probe with vowel-heavy strings if you like. The answer is always a real word from the pool.
How are duplicate letters scored?
The standard way: green first, then amber for letters that appear elsewhere in the word, but a letter is marked amber only as many times as it appears in the answer. If the answer has one E and you guess two, only one is coloured.
When does a new word come out?
At midnight South African Standard Time. Everyone in the country gets the same word on the same day, the pool is walked without repeats, and an unfinished board is saved in your browser so you can come back to it.
Where are my stats kept?
In your browser's localStorage only. Games played, wins, current and best streaks and the guess distribution are never sent anywhere, and clearing site data clears them.
